RAISING THE AWARENESS OF THE TOURISM SECTOR ON MODERN ENERGY-EFFICIENT TECHNOLOGIES AND ITS INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROCESSES OF ENERGY SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Summary

In the post-pandemic period, great importance is given to the introduction of modern energy-efficient technologies, especially in the field of tourism, as tourism is one of the leading sectors of the Georgian economy. In October 2010, within an EU-initiated Covenant of Mayors, a conference dedicated to this initiative was held in Georgia, in particular in Tbilisi, emphasizing the importance of cities as complex systems in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Within the framework of the EU-defined energy efficiency implementation priorities, the municipality has been identified as the main driving force in the development and implementation of the Energy Sustainable Action Plan for Cities. By signing the Covenant of Mayors in 2011, Batumi has joined the initiative aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20% up to 2020 - a goal that must be achieved in the light of the city's social and economic development. For the development of Batumi as a tourist city, the introduction of modern clean technologies and energy-efficient measures is very necessary, because the energy consumption of the city, respectively, greenhouse gas emissions are significantly increasing every year. One of the important sectors in Batumi that contributes to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions is tourism, which has been included as one of the target groups in the sustainable energy development plan of the city.

To find out the current state of energy efficiency and problems in the tourism sector in the Adjara region and in particular in Batumi, hotels and commercial facilities were surveyed.

The survey was conducted before the Worldwide Pandemic. By 2021, the tourist flow has not increased significantly to have a large impact on the result obtained. In the post-pandemic period, it is planned to once again conduct the study and compare it with the pre-pandemic period. This will allow us to identify the differences and objective consequences of a pandemic. It is necessary to raise the awareness of the private sector employed in the tourism sector about modern energy-efficient technologies and to involve this sector in energy efficiency improvement programs. In case of project implementation, energy losses in the tourism sector of Batumi will be significantly reduced and the saved funds will be used for holding the other tourism events. At the initial stage, the level of awareness of the tourism sector regarding energy efficiency will be raised, and at the next stage - the entire population will receive information about the benefits of introducing such technologies. It is desirable to set up and put into operation a laboratory equipped with modern technologies and train qualified local staff who will conduct energy efficiency audits and will be able to issue recommendations.
